Time to get things off the ground! Starting today, I will be posting tips for your RPG gaming sessions and offering adventures ready to be dropped into any campaign or run as a one-shot adventure. Every adventure is designed for minimal prep work by the GM, thus saving them time and money. Every adventure ends with a cliff-hanger of sorts allowing for you to continue the story. I will also offer suggestions on stringing some of the adventures together into expanded adventures and campaigns.

Now, on to the heart of today’s post! Today marks the first of a blog series I call: “Feeding Adventurers on a Budget”. This blog series takes into account small budgets and how to feed your group on a budget. I make sure to try each recipe out before hand and give you an idea of the costs. Because cooking can be time intensive, I make sure that every recipe takes minimal time, effort, cooking skill, and saves as many dishes as possible. If your group is anything like mine, sessions tend to be long and include a dinner break. Normally, we just go grab fast food, hit up a restaurant, or order pizza; however, there are rare occasions when someone actually cooks. Though, my group is more like an army than an adventuring group, so the cheaper the better.
I like to play around when I cook, so I tend to alter recipes a bit. A little background on my cooking: I used to be a terrible cook. So much so, no one wanted to eat my food. After I got married, it became a necessity to learn to cook because of my wife’s schedule versus my own. After the first year of cooking, I finally got the hang of it (and have dishes I have been requested to make). To make things easier, recipes are for 4-5 people.
Monday, my wife asked me to make a dinner with lots of veggies. Instantly, I thought, “Meatless Monday!” Okay, not the normal adventurer here, so sue me. I did some quick browsing for ideas and came across this gem: One-Pot Mushroom and Potato Curry . I had the rice, spices (other than curry paste), vegetable broth (I use Vegita, which is a German dry vegetable broth mix) and the cabbage on hand. Everything else (including the red curry paste at $3.50, and eggplant at $3.25) cost about $10. Cost of living is a little low here, so it may run around $15-20 for other areas to make 4-5 servings. A little extra potato and rice can easily adjust for another person or two.
 One-Pot Curry to Rule Them All!
Ingredients (4-5 Servings)
·         2 tbsp canola oil (any light flavor oil will work)
·         1 sweet onion, chopped into chunks
·         1 large potato, chopped into small chunks
·         1 large eggplant (Around 1.5-2 pounds), peeled, chopped into chunks, and rinsed
·         250g package of button mushrooms, rinsed and sliced
·         1 small cabbage (1/2-3/4 lbs.) roughly chopped
·         2-4 tbsp Red curry paste (depending on heat level, red works better than green for coconut milk)
·         250ml vegetable stock
·         400ml can reduced-fat coconut milk
·         ½ tbsp of Garlic Salt
·         ½ tbsp of yellow curry powder (this is different than curry paste)
·         Salt and pepper to taste
·         ¾ cup of dry rice, make as directed in separate pot (rice is normally 1+2, 1 cup rice + 2 cups water)
Directions
  1. Heat oil on medium-high heat in a large soup pot (at least 2 qts in size). Toss in onions, potatoes, and mushrooms. Sauté for 4-5 minutes.

  2. Throw in eggplant and spices. Sautee for another 2-3 minutes, then add the rest of the ingredient list, except for the rice. Bring to a slow boil, reduce heat, cover, and allow to simmer until rice is finished. Stir occasionally.

  3. Make rice as directed in a separate pot. Most rice takes 15-20 minutes. The curry tastes better the longer it simmers, so do not worry if you start the rice late.

  4. Place cooked rice into bowls. Top with curry mix and enjoy!
Let me know how you guys like the dish! Try to original as well! You can also make the curry ahead of time, freeze it, and throw it in a crockpot on high for about 90-120 minutes (or before the session starts on low for 2-3 hours).
